Individual student data is never used in marketing without separate written consent from the student or their parent/guardian.
4. Data Storage, Security, and Location
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information:
- Authentication: Google Sign-In provides secure identity verification with industry-standard encryption
- Document Storage: Academic records, transcripts, and PDFs are stored securely in Supabase S3 storage with restricted access controls
- Essays & Materials: Essays and application materials are stored in Lighten Academy's Google Workspace environment with restricted access
- Database: Student profile data is stored in our secure database with encryption
- Access Control: Only authorized individuals (students viewing their own records, assigned advisors, and administrators) have access to student information
- Activity Monitoring: We maintain audit logs of critical operations to ensure security and accountability
5. Data Sharing and Access Control
We do not sell, rent, or share personal information with third parties for their marketing purposes. Access to student information is strictly limited as follows:
5.1 Who Can Access Student Records
- Students: Can view and manage their own complete records
- Parents/Guardians: Have access to their child's records (for students under 18)
- Assigned Advisors: Can access assigned students' records, including consultant notes and academic information
- Administrators: Lighten Academy administrators have access to all records for operational and administrative purposes
5.2 Note Visibility
- Consultant Notes: Visible only to assigned consultants, administrators, and the student
- General Notes: Visible to all authorized advisors and administrators
5.3 Third-Party Services
We may share information with third-party service providers who assist us in operating the platform:
- Google (for authentication and Google Workspace services)
- Supabase (for database and file storage)
These service providers are contractually obligated to protect your information and only use it to provide services to Unic View. They have their own privacy policies, which you should review.

We may disclose information when required by law, court order, or to protect the rights, privacy, safety, or property of our users, the public, or Lighten Academy.

Unic View serves students in grades K-12, including minors under the age of 18. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

For students under 13, Lighten Academy is required to obtain verifiable parental consent before allowing use of Unic View. Parental consent methods may include:

6.2 Parental Rights (FERPA)
Parents and guardians of students under 18 have the following rights:

- Right to Delete: Request deletion of your child's account and associated data

- Students and parents can access and view records through the Unic View platform
- Individual records can be manually downloaded in their standard format
- Bulk or batch downloads are not currently available
7.2 Data Portability and Download
- You may request to download your personal information in a commonly used electronic format

7.3 Correction of Information
- If you believe information is inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading, you may request correction

8. Data Retention and Deletion Practices
8.1 Active Students
- Student records are maintained and accessible throughout their enrollment with Lighten Academy
- Records support ongoing academic advising, progress tracking, and college planning
8.2 Graduated Students
- Upon graduation, student records are permanently retained in Unic View for historical and archival purposes
- Graduated student accounts become read-only, preventing further changes or additions
- Graduated students may still access their records but cannot modify them
8.3 Student-Initiated Deletion
- Upon request, we will delete personal information associated with a student account
- Deletion requests are processed within 30 days of receipt
- Some data may be retained if required by law or for legitimate operational purposes (e.g., audit trails, backup copies)
8.4 Administrative Data Retention
- System logs and activity records may be retained for security and compliance purposes
- Backup copies may be retained according to our data backup and disaster recovery policies
